I did this little painting a while ago, it’s been propped up on a picture rail of paintings from various places that I call my travelogue. Recently two women came to the studio (Mcrae Studio) for a tour, and looking at this piece they commissioned me to do a larger version. For some reason I have no photo ref of this now demolished building or of the day. So my larger version is done from this study and whatever else I could find for reference. The nice thing about working from a study is that I’m not rendering a photo, it’s an interpretation of an interpretation. Since I’ve already posted a start to finish demo, I thought I’d post a “making it better” demo with a shot of the painting in the mid-phase and a shot of the finish and talk about what decisions were made to improve on the painting without taking it too far from the original.
I’m trying to figure out how to put all my demos on the demo page but until then, I’m adding a demo II page up top.
