I was hoping for a a flash of brilliance for this next post, the link that Scott Christensen put up on his facebook page put the viewer numbers through the roof. Thanks Scott, I owe you a couple of nice bottles of wine…. don’t suppose you’d take a painting? I got plenty of those. How about a cat… got plenty of those too. But, alas, no brilliance. What I do have is what I’m working on at the moment which is a series of wave paintings for a couple of interior designers. The paintings themselves are sort of unremarkable, they will be nice, I’ll make sure of that but it’s the process of working on a commission that you may find interesting.
For those in the upper echelons of the fine art realm, a commission probably isn’t in the line up unless the Queen of Spain calls. For the rest of us, we need to do them from time to time to pay for things like food, beer and prostate vitamins. One thing I learned as an illustrator is to keep the client in the loop throughout the whole deal in order to prevent the “Oh…. that’s not what I had in mind exactly” thing. So, when these I.D. guys said “we like this one wave painting, can you do 3 more”, I said sure, let me shoot you some little sketches. In fact when they saw the sketches they asked for sand pipers instead of the buzzards I put in, no prob here. Less work for me. A sand piper is about 3 notes of color… look at the money I’ll save.
I’m sure you’ve figured out that these aren’t plein air paintings. Waves are a little harder than, say, a rock that doesn’t move, to get right en plein air. That’s why I use a monitor and the sketches to get to the final. So my moral is if you don’t want the Is-someone-lactose-intolerant? look on the face of your client, keep them involved. If they want little color studies… do them. It’ll save you a lot of time in the end.
On a side note, so many people read the “snappy comeback reference planner” it was amazing… got a lot of good responses too. But no one touched OMG WTF, which I think is equal in funny to the comebacks. So if you want another laugh, check it out under humor me, if you haven’t already.
